It\u2019s nearly Halloween<\/strong>! It\u2019s time for candy, costumes, and carousing. It\u2019s also time for \u201ctweens\u201d and teenagers to make a big bid for their independence. While going Trick or Treating with Mom or Dad is fun for little kids, once adolescents hit a certain age it becomes \u201cuncool.\u201d The alternative is, of course, to go out with groups of their friends – strolling around the neighborhood, collecting candy, pulling pranks, sometimes looking to vandalize property–but hopefully not partaking in too many \u201ctricks.<\/p>\n

Whether your child chooses to engage in risky behavior or not, it turns out that Halloween is \u00a0the most dangerous nights of the year for pedestrians, and – according to studies – is particularly dangerous for teenagers. While young children are prone to bolt into the road in their attempt to get to the next house – and next batch of candy – quickly, teenagers are more prone to distraction. Whether it\u2019s because they\u2019re joking around with their friends, or looking at their cell phones, or perhaps even engaging in risk behaviors – such as using alcohol and other drugs with their friends at parties – teenagers are more apt to pay less attention to their surroundings – and thus, the traffic and the law while they\u2019re out and about on Halloween. While you may be concerned with how late your kids are planning to be out, it turns out that the 6pm-7pm hour is, in particular, the most deadly for distracted teenagers, according to a 2012 report by WNCT<\/a>.<\/p>\n
